Description

This blog takes a look at the ways women are treated within the video game industry. The audience was focused on young adult female and male gamers, and a blog was created to closely connect with them, much like a site such as Reddit would. Three different topics were focused on, those topics include; workplace harassment, fear of the player, and hypersexualization of females. The first post on the blog discusses workplace harassment. The post includes hiring statistics as well as discussion of the sexual harassment that women face. The second, fear of the player includes the scary situations that female writers, players, developers, etc go through concerning players. This post also included discussion of situations such as the Gamergate scandal as well as other real-life threats that women face. Lastly, the hypersexualization of female characters within games is discussed. This section mostly included information about the clothing that female characters wear and how it is not suitable for their activities. Aside from clothing the section also discussed scenes in games and the tropes that women are involved in. To get the information for each of these posts a variety of academic articles, news reports and videos were used. Hyperlinks were used as well so that people would feel involved and able to do more research if they chose too. Female harassment in the gaming industry is an important topic that is not often talked about in the full extent. Many issues that women face within the industry are pushed to the back burner and this project was created as a way to bring the issue to light.
