Description

This image depicts two African American men working on a turpentine farm in Georgia, one of them is peeling the bark from a pine tree and the other is draining the sap. Turpentine farms were economic staples in 19th century Georgia and hired largely African Americans, many of whom were children of former slaves. The work was difficult and the pay meager, but it was also guaranteed, steady employment in a time when black Americans were struggling to carve out a place for themselves as a free people in the southern United States.
