Description
This lantern slide depicts a wagon ferrying supplies to Lake Erie for Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry’s naval campaign against the British during the War of 1812. Perry was born on August 23, 1785, to a long family line of naval officers. From an early age, Perry was groomed to become a United States Naval Officer, being taught all he needed about tactics and ship management as well as showing a gift for naval command. His most famous accomplishments are his direct influence in shaping the United States victory in the nine battles fought at Lake Erie. The Battle of Lake Erie would make Perry a national hero and one of the most famous individuals of his time, as his accomplishments defended the American West and crippled the following British land campaigns in both the United States and Canada. While his later life was embroiled in controversies, he would be remembered as an American hero who died young in Venezuela of Yellow Fever.
