Description
Lantern slide of a floating whale station in Spitsbergen. Spitsbergen is the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago located between Norway and the North Pole. Whaling activity began there in the early 1600's. Whalers would throw harpoons at the whales and wait until they drowned to collect them. In 1864 people began using harpoon guns, which would explode inside of the whale killing it upon impact. In this picture you can see an image of a whaling station that has hunted multiple rorqual whales.
