Abstract
If you grew up or had a child in the United States after 1969, the work of Eric Carle has touched your life. Carle was a German American illustrator, graphic designer, art director, and children’s book author, who is best known for his work The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book has been a staple to every American preschool classroom for over 40 years and has been translated into 66 languages to fit into schools across the globe (Eric Carle’s biography, 2019). It is hard to overstate the popularity and acclaim The Very Hungry Caterpillar has rightfully received. According to Forbes, “The book has been on [Publishers Weekly's most recent bestseller list for children's picture books] consistently for 997 weeks, according to Publishers Weekly, or approximately 19 years” (Durkee, 2021). Along with his other works, Carle has sold more than 170 million books during his career, making a huge impact on children’s literature and the lives of children and parents alike. With all that in mind, who was Eric Carle? What events lead to his success?
