Description

In this lantern slide, a woman can be seen packaging granulated sugar into large burlap sacks. By the end of the Nineteenth Century, New York City had developed a significant presence in the sugar refining industry, becoming home to major sugar refineries for companies such as Domino Sugar and the American Sugar Refining Company. The company depicted in the image is likely the Arbuckle brothers’ sugar company, as indicated by the Arbuckle labeled bag of sugar in the lower right of the slide. John Arbuckle and his brother Charles Arbuckle, after succeeding in the coffee industry, began making an impact in the sugar industry. The brothers not only set up their own sugar refining company but would also be the first to patent bagging sugar into two-pound bags for market. The company would later face off in a sugar price war with their rival Henry Havemeyer, as well as face later legal troubles, but these events failed to ruin the brothers’ company and helped them develop better practices that ensured higher quality products.
