Description

At the start of 1898, USS Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba. It was sunk on February 15th, 1898. The ship started to sink after some of its guns exploded sometime during the night. There were 374 people on board. 268 of them were killed. Their deaths caused a media frenzy, and it contributed to the start of the Spanish American War. There were multiple attempts to recover all of the bodies from the wreck. To this day it’s estimated that there are still about 30 sets of remains within the wreck. While most of the battleship is now on the bottom of the sea, the mast was recovered in 1911, and it was placed in Arlington National Cemetery on May 30th, 1915.
