Description
This image is showing how jewelry was made in factories in Providence, R.I. -- likely a factory in the Providence Jewelry Manufacturing District. It shows the tools used to make jewelry, such as hammers, forceps, saws, tweezers, gas jets to heat the metals, and bowls of water to cool them. At this point in time, Providence was the largest center of jewelry manufacturing in the United States, as early as 1880 Rhode Island accounted for more than a quarter of the country's jewelry production.
