Description
This lantern slide depicts a lasting machine, which was used in shoe making to create a better fitting shoe tailored specifically to the customer’s needs. The lasting machine was created by Jan E. Matzeliger in 1880 as a way of improving the efficiency and productivity of the lasting process for shoe making as well as reducing the cost of shoes. This further automation of the already mostly automated shoe making industry allowed shoe manufacturers to create better, cheaper fits for a wider range of customers.
