This a dictionary of the Sikaiana language compiled between 1980 and 1987, based on about 3 1/2 years of ethnographic research among the Sikaiana people of the Solomon Islands. I am indebted to the help of many Sikaiana people in compiling this dictionary, especially Dr. John Kilatu. Gary Simons of SIL provided immense technical support and use of his computer in 1983. I also owe a debt to Dr. Pita Sharpless who had a word list that provided an important beginning. The dictionary would not have been possible without their help. I accept all responsibility for all errors and any shortcomings.
This dictionary is especially important because the Sikaiana language is rarely used in everyday conversations as it was during my stays from 1980-93. I encourage Sikaiana people to download the dictionary and make any corrections and expand the dictionary.
I suggest that anyone who looks at the list of Sikaiana words also download the guide to abbreviations. The following files are divided into various sections of the dictionary including abbreviations, an updated introduction in 2020, an introduction to the grammar of the language, a list of Sikaiana words and their English glosses, a Finder list of English words and their Sikaiana translations, and appendices including a list of personal names, place names and common English/Pijin borrowings in 1987 (compiled with the help of Mark Etua). There is also a file with the entire dictionary.
