Author Biography

Dr. Nayara Da Costa Silva Beall is a graduate of the University of Washington and the Universidade Federal do Paraná in Brazil. She received her doctoral degree in the Counselor Education and Supervision program from Antioch University and is a 2023 NBCC Minority Fellow.

Dr. Beall is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Washington and assumes the role of Clinical Director at a group practice serving individuals and families struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). She is an immigrant from Brazil and is passionate about utilizing research as a tool for advocacy to increase access to mental health for marginalized communities. Her research agenda includes Brazilian immigrants, the Latine community, BIPOC individuals, and individuals with OCD.

Abstract

This study explored the experiences of Latine doctoral students in Counselor Education and Supervision programs in the United States. The consensual qualitative research yielded five domains: cultural values, representation, racialized experiences, support, and social justice. The findings are discussed with direct applications for programs and recommendations for future research.

Public Significance Statement

This study explored the experiences of Latine students in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) programs, highlighting systemic barriers and challenges these communities face along with suggestions for the field. The findings underscored the importance of increasing the representation of marginalized individuals in CES and promoting equitable spaces in academia to address systemic oppression and promote the success of Latine students in CES.
