Description
Founded in 1832, the Erie Railroad initially was created to connect the Hudson River with Lake Erie. Construction began in 1836, with the route being completed in 1851, connecting Piermont, New York (site of the Hudson River) to Dunkirk, New York (site of Lake Erie). This section of the track runs parallel to the Erie Canal in New York, a canal created in 1825 to connect the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean that runs from the Hudson River to Lake Erie. The railroad saw several expansions in decades after, and was operational until 1960.
