Description

The image in this lantern slide depicts the historic Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York. The cemetery was first established in 1849 as a ninety-acre plot of land that still serves as a nonprofit, nonsectarian cemetery. The cemetery connects with the Old Dutch Church cemetery, but both cemeteries have chosen to remain separate entities. The maintenance of the cemetery is provided by donors and investors who have family members buried on the grounds. Currently, there are over 47,000 people interred in the cemetery. There are many famous people buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, including individuals such as William Rockefeller, a co-founder of the Standard Oil Company and whose family owns a private burial lot; Washington Irving, the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; the two daughters and third son of Alexander Hamilton; Walter Chrysler, the founder of the Chrysler Corporation; and Andrew Carnegie, the founder of the Carnegie Steel Company.
