Description

In this lantern slide, a portion of the Palisades in New Jersey can be seen. Also called the New Jersey Palisades or the Hudson River Palisades, it is a line of steep cliffs on the West side of the lower Hudson River in New Jersey, stretching 20 miles from Jersey City to near Nyack, NY and reaching 540 feet tall at its Northern end. The Palisades are on the first map of the New World created by Gerardus Mercator from accounts from the explorer Giovanni de Verrazano. The cliffs have also been the site of many historic events, being the site of an unsuccessful British ambush against George Washington’s forces during the Revolutionary War, as well as being the location of the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, as well as several other official and unofficial duels.
