Description
This image depicts the Bethlehem Shipyards in Hoboken, New Jersey, operated by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, a branch of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, between 1938 and 1983. Under Bethlehem Steel, the shipyard produced cruise ships for use on the Hudson River and troop carriers during the First World War. The shipyard was originally founded in 1890 by W. & A. Fletcher Company, which operated between 1890 and 1929 as a steamboat and steam engine manufacturer. Before the First World War, the dockyard served as docks for cruise ships but was repurposed as a troop embarkation port during the war and later relegated to an industrial shipping port following the war’s conclusion. The shipyard would stay in operation until 1984, where a shift in commerce to deep water shipyards forced operations to shut down.
