Description

Carlstein Castle, also spelled Karlštejn Castle, was built in 1348 as a private residence and treasury safe house for the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia Charles IV. Among the treasures that were safeguarded at Carlstein Castle included the Imperial Crown Jewels, holy relics, and the royal archives. The castle has always been the property of the king or the state even after it was no longer used as a residence or treasury vault. The slide shows Carlstein Castle perched on a mountaintop over a small Bohemian village.
