Description
Construction of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris Cathedral) began in 1163, and was finished by 1260, though modifications were made in later centuries. It replaced the much older Cathedral of Saint Étienne from around the 5th century. Today it is a symbol of not just Paris, but all of France. Its cultural significance led to its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the best examples of French Gothic architecture with its pioneering use of ribbed vaults and flying buttresses.
