Description
Construction of the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille (Marseilles Cathedral) began in 1852 when Emperor Napoleon III laid the foundation stone. It was completed in 1896, and consecrated in 1897. It was built on the site of the previous cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century. Architects Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérandieu designed it in the Romanesque-Byzantine Revival style.
