Description
Lookout Mountain is a site of historical significance in American history, beyond the amazing view of the Chattanooga river that the woman is photographed enjoying.
During the 18th century, the mountain was the location of the "Last Battle of the Cherokees" during the Nickajack Expedition between the Chickamauga Cherokee and American Frontiersman. The frontiersmen increasingly encroached on Cherokee Territory which led to the war, where the treaty of Tellico resulted in the Frontiersmen ceding land.
During the Civil War, the Battle of Lookout Mountain took place there (where artillery is still found). At this point, the Union was starting to make a turn-around after The Battle of Gettysburg. The Union army defeated the Confederates and took control of the mountain, gaining a significant advantage logistically and opening up access to the deep south.
