Description
Due to the Appalachian Mountains causing rough terrain in North Carolina, profitable farming is difficult, so the state’s main income source is timber from the hillside woods. The wood is stacked into a cluster, along with leaves, grass, and straw, also known as a “charcoal oven”. A layer of clay, featuring ventilation holes, is also added to the charcoal oven to regulate how much air reaches the timber as it burns. The resulting solid charcoal is mainly used as fuel, but it is also incorporated into other products such as pig food, gunpowder, and crayons.
