Description
This image depicts the Brooklyn Bridge as it stretches across the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Plans and designs for the bridge began as far back as 1800 as engineers tried to design a good method of connecting the then separated cities of New York City and Brooklyn. Originally, ferry travel was the only convenient way to travel between the two cities, until in 1857 a German immigrant engineer named John Augustus Roebling suggested building a suspension bridge over the East River. In February 1867, the New York State Senate approved construction of the bridge, allowing the New York and Brooklyn Bridge Company to begin construction on January 2, 1870. The Brooklyn Bridge opened on May 24, 1883, drawing thousands of individuals to attend the opening ceremony. Numerous additions and renovations were made to the bridge over the years, including the addition of a trolley system.
