Description
Wall Street was founded in the seventeenth century in Dutch New Amsterdam under the name Het Cingel, which meant the Belt. A city wall existed along this stretch of road between 1653 to 1699, contributing to the name it would later be known by. Running for eight city blocks between Broadway and South Street, Wall Street has a long history with finance that would lead to it becoming synonymous with the United States market. Over the centuries, it has been the site of security trading and slave trading in the eighteenth century, the home of Federal Hall and the city government, various big businesses, and New York’s financial center. The success found on Wall Street promoted its own growth, leading to the construction of the city’s first skyscrapers along the street, which can be seen in the image on this lantern slide.
