Description

This lantern slide depicts freshly churned butter coming off an assembly line to be washed. The butter industry did not arise until the 1860s, originally being sold as a supplemental income for family farms. The industry was inspired by the innovation of cheese mass production a decade earlier, leading enterprising entrepreneurs to repurpose cheese mass production techniques for butter, made easier due to both being dairy products.
