Abstract

Career development is often confined to a single course despite its relevance across counseling practice. This conceptual article reframes it as an integrative foundation for counselor preparation, supervision, and professional identity. It examines connections among work, mental health, education, disability, relationships, and social context across counseling specializations. The article also considers doctoral training and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in career-related practice. Recommendations address curriculum design, supervision, and future research on integrated career preparation.

Public Significance Statement

Career concerns affect mental health, relationships, and life satisfaction, yet they are often marginalized in counselor training. This article emphasizes the need to integrate career development across counselor education, supervision, and professional identity formation. Strengthening career counseling preparation can enhance holistic client care and better equip counselors to respond to the evolving realities of work and well-being.
