Description
This image depicts Roald Amundson, a Norwegian explorer and the first in the modern world to reach the South Pole and Antarctic Ocean. His original goal was to go to the North Pole, but another crew beat him to it, so he changed course, thus pitting him against British explorer Robert Falcon Scott. To maintain financial and material support, he did not let anyone in on this change of course, aside from his brother and second in command, until they were too far into the expedition to turn back. He received many awards for his work and helped put the newly freed Norway on the map.
