Description
Ceylon, or modern-day Sri Lanka, is located in the Indian Ocean. It was a British colony from 1815 to 1948. Sri Lanka is known for its production of tea, rice, quinine, cocoa, cinnamon, tobacco, nuts, and rubber. Precious stones are also important to Sri Lanka's economy. They used to have well-known pearl fisheries, and they are one of the top five gem producing companies in the world today . Moonstones, rubies, sapphires, and cat's-eyes have all been quarried in Sri Lanka, among with many other types of gems. This slide shows a traditional way to grind the gems.
